Travel Insurance

h1 Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

If you can’t afford travel insurance then you can’t afford to travel. With the market of travel insurance being so competitive and the costs regularly reviewed and improved, what has always been a necessity when travelling can now be viewed in a pleasant light and no longer considered as a burden for the average traveler and holiday-maker. It is liberating to know that, just in case you’re out of luck, most traumatic events while travelling can be remedied or assisted by the cover you purchase before you leave. This far outweighs the disappointment of wishing you had spent a little extra on travel insurance. The potential risks encountered when travelling or leaving home for a length of time with only a few bags to hold your previous belongings can be daunting especially when you are surrounded by strangers who do not speak your language!

And even more important than getting travel insurance is making sure that you purchase the correct policy and you understand exactly what is and is not covered in your policy. Do not hesitate to voice any queries and always read your policy wording carefully before purchasing your travel insurance. You will find countless reviews online sent in by holiday makers who have lost money because they either didn’t have insurance in the first place or neglected to familiarise themselves with the fine print on their policy meaning they thought they were covered in certain situations when in fact they weren’t.

Here are a few examples of mistakes that might render you unworthy of a claim: having a different name on your travel documents to those on your passport (for example if you still have your passport in your maiden name and have booked your flight in your married name); not getting a police report to back up your claim; injury incurred while under the influence of alcohol and leaving baggage unattended in a case of theft.

Remember, When buying travel insurance, that the policy wording can be very involved and specific and underwriters are quick to refuse payment should your policy not cover even a single aspect of your insurance claim unless you know to what extent you are covered, in which case your policy wording is your best asset.

Why Is your Motorcycle Bigger Than Mine But You Pay Lower Motorcycle Insurance Premiums ?

h1 Monday, November 9th, 2009

So now you’ve finally gotten your motorcycle, and it’s time to get your motorcycle insurance. How do you get an insurance premium that doesn’t cost you more than your motorcycle? That is a question that many people ask. There are some common methods you can use to lower your insurance premium.

All insurance companies evaluate the cost for an insurance policy in basically the same way. They evaluate the risk, and then apply a premium that reflects and covers that risk. Therefore, the important factors to consider when purchasing a motorcycle are the factors that involve risk. The age of the rider, the experience level, and age and size of motorcycle are just a few of the categories they consider.

Your location also contributes to the price, as cities are considered to have a far greater risk factor than town or country riding. Many insurance companies will lower your insurance premium if you take an approved training course, like drivers ed for a car. Also, the type of housing you have for your motorcycle, if any, when it is not being ridden plays a fairly high factor in your premiums.

One of the major areas that will affect your insurance premium is the age, style and size of your motorcycle. Others are the riders age, experience and occupation. While you can’t do anything about your age, or experience level, other than the previously mentioned training course, you can control the factors of the age and size of your motorcycle. Many new riders benefit from buying an older motorcycle with a smaller engine for the first couple years, and then when you have a little more verifiable experience upgrading to the bike you want.

The amount of riding you will do is directly linked to your risk factor and therefore to your insurance premium. Let’s face it, the more you ride your bike, the more you are exposed to the risk factors presented by other traffic. City riders tend to have noticeably higher risk rates than country or town riders do.

One factor that you have to negotiate with is the amount of deductible required to make an insurance claim. Many people find it beneficial to increase their deductible and therefore lower their insurance premium. This is also beneficial in the fact that you only pay the deductible when you make a claim on your insurance. Typically,if a repair will cost you less than $300 to $500 you’re better to pay for it yourself than put it through your insurance anyway.

Modifications also greatly affect the price of your insurance. Therefore it is in your best interest to keep the modifications to a minimum. For new riders, an older bike with a smaller engine will help to keep your insurance rates down. Happy Riding.

Three Things to Consider in a Health Insurance Contract

h1 Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Before getting into a discussion on what to look out for in a health insurance contract, it is important to first to appreciate the fact that reading through contracts is quite an unpleasant task to most of us, as most of these contracts are typically written in a language we don’t particularly like called legalese, with most of the details further hidden in the contracts’ fine print. Perhaps, someone might argue, the lawyers who develop contracts do this deliberately, to make room for disputes and thereby make work for themselves, as most disputes arising out of not reading contracts carefully will typically be resolved in courts – with aid of lawyers, of course.

Yet failure to understand a health insurance contract can turn out to be a very big blunder, like when one is told that they will have to foot their medical bill for one obscure reason or another, with an even more obscure clause (in the health insurance contract they got themselves into) being quoted as the reason for their being denied coverage.

Failure to read through your health insurance contract carefully could see you get into a situation where you health insurance provider won’t pay for your medical bills – in spite of your having a health insurance cover with them, which can be a very maddening affair.

The first thing you should make an effort to understand in your health insurance contract before signing on the dotted line is the policies’ limitations, as most (if not all) health insurance providers tend to impose some limitations on their coverage, so that the typical health insurance policy will tend to cover some conditions and not others. And even for the conditions it covers, the typical health insurance policy offers coverage only up to a given bill amount. Yet these are crucial things that – if you are not careful – can overlook when signing your health insurance contract, only for them to turn around to haunt you later on.

The second thing you should make an effort to understand in your health insurance contract is the point in time when the policy takes effect, because most health insurance policies tend to be structured in such a way that their coverage only takes effect a considerable period of time after getting into the contract, again a fact that is typically hidden in the fine print.

And the third thing you need to make an effort to understand in your health insurance contract is what types of healthcare facilities claims on it can be made, and which healthcare facilities don’t qualify for reimbursement under the contract. As it turns out, healthcare providers tend to be choosy when it comes to healthcare providers to work with, with many opting not to pay for healthcare bills incurred in some facilities.

If You Have Employees, You Need Employers Liability Insurance

h1 Monday, July 13th, 2009

Everyone workplace carries risks of accidental injury. In some cases, the operation of the business seems normally benign, whereas other businesses are dangerous because of the nature of their operations. It’s for these reasons that employers liability insurance often is required.

Employer’s liability insurance is designed to shield employers from losses incurred by employees as a result of on-the-job injuries, illnesses resulting from workplace conditions, or death as a result of a work practice or accident.

For instance, it’s to be expected that an interstate trucker driving a big rig with a heavy load could face risks unlike other workers. But what about a file clerk who gets hit when wrestling with an unwieldy metal file drawer that’s been filled with too many folders? That, too, is a workplace liability.

And it’s for these expected and unexpected cases of risk that employer’s liability insurance was created.

Employer’s liability insurance comes under a classification called “risk financing.” Today many large corporations, and even small- or medium-sized companies, employ people to monitor the business for potential liability and manage its insurance policies. These employees are known as risk managers.

The practice began when individuals or companies facing common risks banded together to create a fund to compensate any member that suffered loss. For instance, the famous insurance firm Lloyd’s of London was founded by a group of shipping company owners to repay its fund subscribers when ships were lost at sea. Today there are insurance carriers, including Lloyd’s, who specialize in liability insurance.

By paying a premium to the insurer, the insurer gains protection from what’s known as “third-party claims.” This means a claim brought by someone who’s not party to the contract between the insurer and the insured. In our scenario above, the injured employee could file a claim for lost wages and/or medical expenses against the employer’s liability insurance. In fact, the employer might even help the employee file the claim, rather than have to pay the employee’s expenses out of company revenues.

However, if the liability situation is less clear-cut, an insurance company may elect to defend the insured in court rather than pay the claim. An expensive legal battle might follow to determine who actually is responsible for the accident that caused the employee’s injury.

Many higher risk employees are engaged in one of the businesses that are typically required to have employer’s liability insurance. Others include building contractors, factories, counselors, physicians and other professionals. The deciding factor in all cases is whether the individual or company engages in a type of business likely to put employees at risk.

A Few Pointers To Help To Lower The Price Of Health Insurance

h1 Sunday, April 26th, 2009

A health insurance policy these days does not have to be expensive and here we will look at just a few of the ways in which you can reduce your costs.

Sticking to a healthy life style has a great number of benefits and one benefit which is all too frequently overlooked is that of reducing your health insurance premium. Ensure that you get regular exercise, follow a healthy diet, stop smoking and excessive drinking and you can not only drastically reduce the number of doctor’s visits you need to make but will also be seen to present a much better risk to the insurers.

It is also a good idea to buy health insurance when you are young as costs vary to a great extent with age. Arranging a health insurance policy at the age of 35 will not only cost you much less than buying the same plan at 50 but you might also enjoy lower costs the longer you stay with an insurer.

You are also often able to reduce your premiums by arranging plans with high deductibles. The deductible is money that you pay towards your medical treatment and provided you are generally healthy and do not fall ill often then this may well save you money. You have to be careful though as if you are likely to require treatment, maybe because you have a history of medical problems, then a health policy with a high deductible may not be of benefit.

Looking around for a good health plan is also always to be recommended. There are various forms of health insurance plan being sold these days and hundreds of different insurers to choose from so that there is fierce competition for your business. Do not simply choose the first plan you are offered but look around and get the best plan for your particular circumstances at a good price.

Finally, do not be afraid to seek advice from an independent insurance agent. Insurance agents work every day with a a very large number of different insurers across the country and can save you not only a great deal of money but also considerable time by matching up your specific needs to the insurance policies presently available on the market.

How to File a Total Loss Car Insurance Claim

h1 Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Total loss claims are filed when a vehicle has been so badly damaged that it would cost more than it`s worth to repair it. However, just what that worth is depends on how the car insurance company sets their standards, so you`ll need to know what this is ahead of time.

What You Will Need

First, you will need to have a police report. When the accident occurs, the police should be called immediately and an accident report will be drawn up. In the case of serious injury (which is quite common in total loss claims), you will need to get a copy of the police report after the fact. Nearly all car insurance companies will disallow damages that have no report, especially when it comes to a total loss claim, since an accident that big should definitely be marked down by the police.

It’s important to call the Canada auto insurance company as soon as possible after the accident, whether you call yourself, or have someone phone in for you. This ensures that they are aware of the problem and will be ready to proceed once the paperwork has been filed. A file for the incident will probably be opened at this point, awaiting any other information that you can gather.

After the fact, as soon as it`s possible, you will need to write down your own statement of what happened. This will help the insurance company process your claim and most won`t move forward without an accident statement, so make sure you get it out as soon as you can. Try to include anything and everything that could be relevant, since this is not a good time to make judgments. The insurance company will make the call on how important each bit of information is, just get all the details down.

Being Honest Will Help

The truth is that an insurance company is looking for holes in your story. There are a lot of people who just make up problems to try and get the insurance money, so understandably, it`s something that needs to be carefully researched.

It`s important not to lie as you go through the process of filing a claim. Even embellishing the facts can be a risky business, it will be assumed that everything you have been saying could be false, so watch it. If you are confused about things and the details of the accident, it`s a better idea to let people know where things are fuzzy, as opposed to inventing it.

What Happens to a Total Loss

If your car is completely destroyed and the insurance company can replace it for less than the repairs would be, chances are the vehicle will be declared a total loss and you`ll be given a replacement vehicle. This should be as similar as possible to your original car and in the same or better condition. However, keep in mind that you can reject the new car and the insurance company will give you the money they would have spent on a replacement, instead. This is a whole other process, but keep in mind that it is possible.

If your car is a total loss, file your auto insurance claim as you would normally and make sure that you have all the paperwork possible. Keep notes on all things pertaining to the accident and be honest, to ensure there are no problems with processing the claim. Should the car insurance company rule in your favor, you`ll be presented with a replacement vehicle or the money to replace it.
